The prices were the amounts that nursing homes charge residents who pay out of their own pockets. However, most nursing home residents are covered by Medi-Cal (known as Medicaid in other states), the government’s health care program for the poor.While a growing number of people are covered by private long-term care insurance, they still represent a small portion of the nursing home population.
“Our purpose in publishing this report is to make consumers aware of the cost,” said Beth Ludden, senior vice president of product development for Genworth, which sells that type of insurance. “We are hoping that it will spur more concrete planning around the risks that occur along with long-term care.”
