AHN | Severe Weather Hits Chicago Suburban Community, No Serious Injuries Reported | April 27, 2007
Chicago, IL AHN - A fast moving storm on Thursday afternoon brought a small tornado to a suburban Chicago community. Strong winds blew cars up in the air, and severe damage occurred to a Chicago nursing home and homes in the area. Authorities say no serious injuries were reported.According to reports published online authorities originally believed a minivan was blown on the roof of the nursing home resulting in the damage. However, the Will County Emergency Management Agencys assistant coordinator John Konopek revealed the minivan had flipped over onto a pickup truck outside the building.
The facility which houses 100 residents of the nursing home and staff was free of injuries, said Julie Hirst, spokeswoman for the Lakewood Nursing Home.
She said that shingles were torn off part of the roof, but the building is still structurally sound.
Hirst revealed windows were smashed forcing the emptying of six rooms, pending repairs and inspections that will be needed.
