Nursing Home Funding is Crucial to Care

By nursing-home-lawyer | May 5, 2007

Here’s a story about what can happen when Medicare funding is pulled from a facility.

The nursing home was forced to shut down when the Pennsylvania Department of Health cut off its funding in March after the facility failed to meet a deadline to comply with standards required for federal Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement.

“They are not in operation,” Richard McGarvey, spokesperson for the health department said Thursday.

All of the 120 residents were relocated by April 10.

The facility on Buck Road had six months to correct safety and maintenance problems found during a Sept. 15, 2006, inspection. Hazards included inadequate access to fire doors, inadequate maintenance of the sprinkler system, faulty fire alarms and inadequate healthcare plans for residents.

The health department made its last inspection in April to make sure no residents were living in the facility, McGarvey said.

“The nursing home doesn’t have a license to operate in Pennsylvania,” he said. “If they wanted to start operating, they would have to go through the license process again.”

Days after the health department pulled the plug on Ridge Crest, family members like Brown received calls from the nursing home informing them that the facility would remain open and patients would not need to be moved.
